Pediatric Foot Care in Corsicana TX
Your Child’s Foot Health & Comfort Is Our #1 Priority
Foot and ankle problems are not limited to adults. Kids can have foot and ankle problems, too. When a child is complaining of pain in their feet or legs, most parents are not sure if the child has an actual problem or “normal” growing pains. The parent may have had similar pains when they were a child.
If you notice that your child has difficulty “keeping up” with the other children when running, it could be because their feet and legs are tiring out too quickly. This can be do to abnormal foot structure or discomfort. At Family Foot & Ankle Centers, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of chilfren’s foot and ankle problems.
What Are Common Children’s Foot & Ankle Problems?
There are many conditions that can affect your child’s feet and ankles. Below we are going to discuss some of the most common problems that parents bring their children to Family Foot & Ankle Centers for evaluation.
Flat feet (fallen arches)
Although most children will develop an arch by the age of 6, some will have an arch that never forms. This does not necessarily mean that they will have pain, but flat feet have been associated with heel pain and other foot and ankle problems. If your child has flat feet and has pain in the feet or legs , they should be evaluated by one of our experienced foot and ankle specialists.
If your child has pain associated with flat feet, there are multiple effective treatments available. Your child may greatly benefit from custom orthotics to be worn in shoes, exercises to strengthen the arch, or as a last resort, minimal incision surgery to re-create the arch.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails are one of the most common reasons that children are seen by our foot specialists. This condition can be hereditary and passed down from parents who also had ingrown toenails. Other causes of this painful condition include shoes that are too small, cutting the toenails incorrectly, and stubbing the toe. By far, the big toenails are the most commonly affected and your child may have pain when wearing shoes. Many parents admit that they never see their children’s toes because they are always wearing socks or shoes. Children can be good at hiding ingrown toenails in fear of having to go to the foot doctor.
At Family Foot & Ankle Centers, we specialize in ingrown toenails, especially in children. With over 10,000 happy patients treated for ingrown toenails, we have the experience that you can trust for your child. The ingrown will be removed as painless as possible and your child will leave the office pain-free. We truly practice painless podiatry.
Heel pain (Sever’s disease)
Does your child have heel pain and while running and playing sports? Sever’s disease is one of the most common causes of heel pain in kids age 8-15. Sever’s disease is inflammatiom of the bone growth plate in the heel. This can cause severe pain with activities. Even though this condition does not cause long-term damage, the pain interferes with the child’s ability to be active and to participate in sports.
Treatment of this painful condition consists of resting foot, stretching the Achilles tendon to take the pressure off of the growth plate, possible immobilization with a cast or walking boot, and prescription anti-inflammatory medication combined with icing.
Family Foot & Ankle Centers can usually find a solution for your child’s foot pain on the very first visit. Our podiatrists recommend early intervention for all foot problems, particularly for children. Allow us to help you by getting your child pain-free and back to the activities they love.
