How Does Diabetes Affect The Feet?

Diabetes can affect your feet in several ways. Below are some of the most common complications.

  • Diabetic Neuropathy

Uncontrolled and untreated diabetes can cause damage to the nerves in your body. It can also cause damage to nerves in your legs and feet. When this occurs, you are unable to feel pressure, temperature or sometimes pain in your feet. This decreased feeling is called sensory diabetic neuropathy. If you are unable to feel a cut or sore on your legs or feet due to neuropathy, it can become worsen and become infected. In diabetic neuropathy, the nerves don’t stimulate the muscles in your feet properly, which causes the foot muscles to not work effectively. This can lead to the feet losing their proper alignment from muscle imbalance.

  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Diabetes can also influence the blood flow into the feet.  If the flow of blood is compromised, it might take days, weeks, or even months for a sore to heal. Poor blood flow to legs is called peripheral arterial disease. If blood flow is decreased to the point where the tissue is not getting enough nutrients, then your sore will not heal and you are at significant risk of developing gangrene and amputation.

How To Prevent Diabetic Foot Problems

Include the following tips for your Diabetes foot care plan:

  • Examine Your Feet Regularly

If you keep a daily check on your feet, you will be able to identify any potential problem before they can become serious problems. If you can’t see your feet, have a loved one check them for you.  You can also use a mirror to examine your feet thoroughly, making sure to look between your toes. If you notice any redness, sores, warmth or thickening in the toenails, call your foot doctor for an evaluation.

  • Wash Your Feet Daily

Make a habit of washing your feet with warm water and antibacterial soap. Test the water first with the back of your hand to make sure it is not too hot. Dry your feet thoroughly with a soft towel and don’t forget to dry between the toes. Do not soak your feet in water for long periods as your skin can become susceptible to bacterial infections.

  • Protect Your Feet from Cold and Hot

Diabetes can cause decreased feeling in the feet. Protect your feet with sunscreen, just like you do the rest of your body. Feet get skin cancer too. Also, keep your feet away from open fires, heaters, heating pad, or any hot water bottle. Every winter we treat patients that have burned their feet trying to keep them warm.
